Lorna Luft Sings Her Mom's Songs

Lorna Luft, daughter of the legendary singer-actress Judy Garland (1922-1969) and half sister of performer Liza Minelli, is an award-winning singer-performer in her own right. Though she made her singing debut at 11 on her mother's telelvision show, she's long since stepped out of her family's shadows.

Now, Lorna Luft takes an insightful look back with her show, "Songs My Mother Taught Me: The Judy Garland Songbook." She brings it to Ridgefield Playhouse on Jan. 20. Among the classic Judy Garland songs Luft introduces in it are,  “The Man That Got Away,” “Get Happy,” “The Trolley Song,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “You Made Me Love You,” “Do It Again,” “This Can’t Be Love" and “Over the Rainbow.” Each of these songs, especially "Over the Rainbow" from Garland's starring role as Dorothy in the film "The Wizard of Oz," became a Judy Garland theme song. Audiences yearned to hear her sing them and each one is a showstopper.

Lorna Luft is also an author. She has written, movingly, about the joys and disappointments she faced growing up with her mother, Judy Garland. Though enormously famous and talented, as Luft related, Garland had a tormented personal life. Yet in spite of her mother's troubles, Luft has said, "The one thing I never questioned about my mother was whether she loved me." See Lorna Luft return the love when she performs "Songs My Mother Taught Me: The Judy Garland Songbook." Her performance begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $57.
