In China, where the acrobatic tradition is 2,000 years old, acrobats sometimes start their training as early as age four. An early start, it seems, is why the 21 performers of The Golden Dragon Acrobats have been able to master their show's you-can-hardly-believe-your-eyes stunts. This expert training and, probably an inborn fearlessness, have earned the troupe the reputation as one of the world's most accomplished. Directed by Danny C. Chang, with choreography and costumes by Angela L. Chang, Golden Dragon has performed to enormous acclaim around the world. What they're able to pull off is stunning. Just a piece of their show includes peformers who "... bend like rubber, spin umbrellas with their feet, scale poles like frightened cats, lean at 45 degree angles, build human pyramids on moving bicycles," as the Associated Press describes it.
The troupe also brings smooth and sleek dance skills to their performance, as well as an infusion of the traditional and the modern in music and costumes. "All of the performers are consummate. Present, masterful, joyous, they communicate these ancient tricks as something brand new. And the powerful music, simple themes, and explosive choreography are about something that transcends cultureabsolute joy in exploring the full potential of the human body," as Maggie Cino of nytheatre.com put it. The Golden Dragon Acrobats perform their show, Cirque D'or at Stamford's Palace Theatre on November 27 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on November 28. Tickets are $20--$40.
