Celebrate Happy Zoo Year!

Just before it's time to break out the bubbly and noise makers, The Beardsley Zoo holds a creature celebration so families can preview how its residents will weather the winter.  Happy Zoo Year! from noon to 3 p.m. on Dec. 29 and 30, has activities and demonstrations that show the ways animals adapt to winter. And, how the zoo makes sure its denizens don't get cabin fever when the weather outside is frightful and they have to stay in.

For instance, visitors can watch as the animals get animated when zookeepers roll out some special enrichment activities. Then, there's a workshop for crafting your own creation to help wildlife in your backyard survive the winter. Also scheduled are kids' workshops (for 6-12 year olds) to create and deliver enrichment items for the zoo animals. They take place in the Research Station at noon and 1:45 p.m. on both days. Each one is geared to a different Zoo population.

Also, a display of "animal art" is on view. Last summer, the zoo's Animal Care staff began training several animals to paint as part of its Animal Enrichment program. Now these budding artists's works are on exhibit, and for sale. "We have found that painting not only provides mental and physical stimulation for the animals but also creates positive interactions between the staff and the animals," says Gregg Dancho, Zoo Director. The zoo's surprisingly talented artists include the Andean Bear, Golden-lion Tamarin, Guinea Hogs, and the Maned Wolf. Resolve to drop by The Beardsley Zoo for its stimulating animal-centric educational entertainmenrt. Then, raise a glass (of free hot beverage) to its fascinating residents. To register for a workshop, call (203) 332-4243. For more information, visit the Zoo's website. The events are free with zoo admission which is $9 and $11.
