Darien Girls Bid for Lacrosse Championship

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. - It was a tough year to be a favorite in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference lacrosse tournaments. Both the boys' and girls' lacrosse championships Friday evening feature the No. 3 and No. 4 teams.

Given how even the competition is in the conference, hardly anyone is surprised. Fans can expect more tight action when the girls take the field at Brien McMahon High School at 4 p.m. and the boys face off at 7 p.m.

Girls' Championship - No. 3 Greenwich (10-2) vs. No. 4 Darien (10-2)

The girls' final will feature a battle between the defending Class L and Class M state champions. Greenwich will play in its first conference final in five years, but the Cardinals have not won a championship since 2003. Darien, meanwhile, is searching for a conference record 14th title.

Greenwich survived a wild comeback against Wilton, knocking off the defending conference champs, 11-10. Darien, meanwhile, authored perhaps its best game of the season in the semifinals, crushing archrival New Canaan, 15-9.

Greenwich edged Darien, 13-12, in its only meeting of the regular season. The Blue Wave has been hot as of late, however, winning their last seven games against in-state opponents.

Boys' Championship - No. 3 New Canaan (11-2) vs. No. 4 Ridgefield (11-2)

Defending conference champion Ridgefield shocked Darien once again, this time in the semifinals, 12-11. Darien had been undefeated against conference opponents this season until crossing the Tigers. Ridgefield will play for its third conference title in four years.

New Canaan is searching for its first conference championship since 2003 and enters the finals as one of the hottest teams in the state. The Rams have won 12 straight, including a dominating semifinal victory against Wilton, 11-6.

The Rams handled Ridgefield May 10, 10-5.
