Freshmen Get a New Perspective

For 14-year-old freshmen Jack Sparkman, Colten Appleby and Andy Pena, the first two days of high school went by without incident. They all confirmed they were yet to be stuffed into any lockers.

But the changes from middle school are big. The schedule, which is an eight-day rotation instead of a five-day one, is confusing, Appleby said.

"For one thing, we have to rotate classes," Sparkman said. "I'm not used to that."

Scattered about the sidewalk beneath their feet were chalk phrases praising the senior class of 2011 and warning the freshmen of what may be coming. But Sparkman, Appleby and Pena seemed more baffled by the larger campus than any freshman hazing.

"The courtyard is cool," Pena said.

Sparkman said, "It's a bigger campus, you have to walk all the way across campus to get to class." Lunch is also a different experience for the new high schoolers. "It's worse, there are so many more people," Sparkman said.

Appleby said, "But you can sit anywhere you want: You can sit outside; it's not assigned."

These freshmen were yet to encounter any bullies and all agreed that their first two days of high school were "all good."
