Known for his modern buildings with broad sweeping planes and lots and lots of open white space, Meier received wide acclaim for Smith House, which is a neat bundle of white squares and glass tucked into a hillside on the water near Contentment Island Road in Darien.

Meier went on to design The Getty Center in Los Angeles and Barcelona’s Museum of Contemporary Art, among many other public and private projects.

His eponymous firm is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, prompting retrospective exhibitions and interviews around the world.

Smith House has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and is about 2,800 square feet set on 1.5 acres. It’s not for sale, but Zillow estimates its market price at about $5.7 million.
