DARIEN, Conn. -- A Stamford man gave a police officer a fake driver's license after he was pulled over in Darien for driving with the wrong license plate last week, according to police.

At around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17 an officer saw a green Subaru driving on Post Road without a front license plate. The officer checked the rear plate and discovered that it belonged to a Honda Accord, police said.

After the car was pulled over the driver admitted to using the wrong plate and said the car belonged to his friend, police said. He gave the officer and ID from New York that identified him at "Eddy Moreno" with a date of birth of Dec. 30, 1977.

The officer reported that the license was obviously fake, and appeared to have been glued together, police said. When questioned, the driver said several times that the license was legitimate and the information on it was his, police said.

The barcode was scanned in the police vehicle, and the barcode belonged to a New York license of a different name, according to police. The driver was then arrested.

Once at police headquarters, the driver admitted that he had bought the license in New York or $150, according to police. He then identified himself as Elder Omar Gonzalez, 39, of Stamford, police said.

Gonzalez was charged with first-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, failure to insure a motor vehicle, improper use of a marker plate and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He posted a $500 bond and was given a court date of Aug. 28.
