The man was seen driving on the Post Road near the Exit 13 off-ramp for Interstate 95 on Dec. 21. A 15-foot metal pole was sticking out of the front passenger window and the rear driver’s side window of the man's car, police said. The pole did not have warning flags as required by state law for oversize loads, police said.
After being stopped, the man told Darien police officers that he had taken the pole from a parking lot on Isaac Street in Norwalk earlier in the week. He told officers he was returning the pole after a friend warned him that he might get in trouble if he attempted to sell the metal for scrap, according to the police report.
Norwalk Police had not received a report of a stolen or damaged pole from Isaac Street before the incident Saturday in Darien. They were investigating the incident, and as of Thursday no criminal charges had been filed.
Darien Police issued a ticket to the driver for failure to secure a load, a motor vehicle infraction carrying a penalty of $117.
