DARIEN, Conn. -- A Darien man was charged with drunken driving last week after police said he crashed a car into a vehicle and then a liquor store.

John Roney, 53, was charged with driving under the influence and taking a vehicle without permission. He was held on a $500 bond.

A driver reported that he was waiting to turn out of 1927 Post Road the evening of Tuesday, July 1, when a Mercedes pulled into the driveway and struck his car. The Mercedes stopped briefly, and then continued and hit a liquor store, police said. The driver whose car was hit approached the Mercedes, which was being driven by Roney. The driver told police that Roney appeared unaware of what was going on. The other driver reached into the Mercedes and took the keys. Roney then got out of the car and sat on a bench while the other driver called 911.

Police arrived on the scene and reported that Roney's eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and he had an odor of alcohol. He told police that he had not been drinking, but officers found a nearly empty pint-sized bottle of vodka on the passenger seat. He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody. His mother then contacted police and said that she was the owner of the Mercedes, and that he had taken it without permission.
