Update: Abuse Workshop Canceled

A workshop Thursday on self-esteem and its role in a child's involvement in abusive relationships has been canceled due to the weather and will be rescheduled for next month. The Darien High School Peace Works Club, headed by Courtney Stein and Emily Kelly, was to co-host the session with the Domestic Violence Task Force.

The workshop centers on building self-esteem, which Domestic Violence Task Force chair Carol Piscitelli says is "one of the factors that can be used to effectively handle bullying and abusive relationships."

"Parents want their children to succeed," said Piscitelli. "When children [have to] deal with these issues, it takes them away from focusing on their futures and success in school."

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Task Force is working to help raise awareness about this issue. They will hang purple ribbons for victims of domestic abuse and put up posters that talk about different power and control tactics.

The workshop also deals with cyberbullying, as well as controlling and abusive aspects of teen dating relationships. Piscitelli believes that this is important information that can help kids develop healthy relationships.

"People often ask, 'Why do they get into these relationships?'" said Piscitelli. "Self-esteem is a big factor."
