As guests sip cocktails and munch on hors doeuvres this month at United Way of Western Connecticuts Community Inspiration Awards Dinner, Harry Hurvitz will take the stage to accept the evening's highest award.
When youre a leader in a practice you can really get a lot done when you mobilize the community, said the Community Inspiration Award winner. Im honored.
Hurvitz is a managing tax partner of strategic clients at Deloitte in Stamford. For more than a decade, he has used his affiliation as a board member for United Way to match his employees with organizations they care about, such as the Volunteer Center of Southwestern Connecticut.
Im a big believer in closing the gap between professional organizations and the charitable view of skills-based volunteers, said Hurvitz.
Hurvitz said a lot of the younger workers at Deloitte now see him as a guide to finding local groups they can serve.
If someone is interested in housing, for example, Hurvitz might connect him with the Shelter for the Homeless, Domestic Violence Crisis Center or the Chester Addison Community Center. Or, if he has a passion for teaching children to read, Hurvitz might suggest plugging volunteer hours with the Urban League of Southern Connecticut.
Hurvitz has also led companywide initiatives for Impact Day, Deloittes national day of community service. Last year, he started a tradition that pulled top experts to teach charities how to successfully run a business in the areas of public relations, financial management and human resources. Representatives from 40 organizations participated last year, Hurvitz said.
There is no lack of places in the community we can help, said the resident of Purchase, N.Y. We try to encourage that mindset in our employees.
