Darien Library Hosts Black History Month Film Festival

DARIEN, Conn.  -- The Children’s Department at the Darien Library will host its first-ever Family Film Festival for Black History Month this month.

During the school recess break week from Monday, Feb. 16, through Friday, Feb. 20, the library will screen one notable children’s movie each day at 2 p.m. featuring black actors and actresses.

Disney’s 2009 Academy Award nominated "The Princess and the Frog" (Rated G, 97 minutes, recommended for ages kindergarten and above) will kick off the Family Film Festival on Monday, Feb. 16. 

Unless noted, all films will screen in the Louise Parker Berry Community Room.

The remaining films are as follows:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 17: "Selma Lord, Selma" (No rating, 94 minutes, Grades 3+)
  • Wednesday, Feb. 18: "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" (Rated G, 88 minutes. Will be shown in the Mezzanine Conference Room, Ages K+) 
  • Thursday, Feb. 19: "The Color of Friendship" (No rating, 87 minutes. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Contains racial epithets) 
  • Friday, Feb. 20: "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" (Rated PG, 86 minutes, Grades 3+).

Each film will be accompanied by a booklist accessible through the Library’s website, along with study guides and discussion questions.
