Denise Pitkin-Tilson, 55, has been charged with stealing more than $10,000 in cash, gift cards, and merchandise from the Target store in Chantilly while working as a temporary employee there, according to a spokesperson from the Fairfax County Police Department.

Pitkin-Tilson also works as an instructional assistant at Eagle View Elementary School in Fairfax, investigators noted.

The incident began shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, when a loss prevention officer from the story on Chantilly Crossing Lane alerted police that the store was missing cash at the end of Pitkin-Tilson’s shift.

At the time, police say that Pitkin-Tilson worked as a part-time cashier and had been recorded for more than a month embezzling money from registers, stealing gift cards, and taking merchandise, unbeknownst to her, according to officials.

Pitkin-Tilson was taken to the Sully District Station and questioned before being sent to the Adult Detention Center on the embezzlement charge. She was later released on a $2,000 unsecured bond and Fairfax County Public School leaders were notified of her arrest.

The school district has not commented on the arrest.

Anyone with information regarding Pitkin-Tilson’s case, or similar incidents has been asked to contact detectives in Fairfax County by calling (703) 246-7800 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
