Matthew Eugene Jett, 37, of Spotsylvania, is behind held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail following his arrest during an investigation into drug sales in the county, the sheriff's office announced on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Days earlier, members of the sheriff’s office Street Crimes Unit were surveilling the Partlow and Beaverdam parts of Spotsylvania following repeated complaints from the community about drug use and sales in the area.

According to Harris, detectives observed suspicious activity at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10 in the 2900 block of Partlow Road, where they made contact with Jett, who initially provided false information to investigators while identifying himself.

The investigation determined that Jett was in possession of more than six dozen capsules of suspected heroin and fentanyl, and it was later determined that he is wanted in various jurisdictions in Virginia for drug-related offenses.

Jett was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and remains incarcerated.

Following his arrest, Harris said that he “wants to send a clear message that the citizens of Spotsylvania are fed up with this kind of poison on our streets. Drug dealers have to get lucky every day; we only need to get lucky once.”
