At around 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 7, crews were called to the 5500 block of Chillum Place NE, where there was a reported fire with smoke and flames coming from the basement of an area home.

More than six dozen firefighters responded, and were able to get the fire under control after utility crews turned off gas to the structure at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Crews returned to service before noon.

The home suffered extensive damage, and three people were taken to area hospitals for evaluation, two for smoke inhalation. Officials made note that all four inside the home were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms.

Officials did not identify the cause or origin of the fire, which remains under investigation.
