Massie was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in June and she, along with her husband, illustrator Cortney Skinner, faces a large amount of medical expenses to pay, according to a friend who started a GoFundMe page.
"With treatments, side effects, and exhaustion, Beth has found it very difficult to write, which is her source of income, though she is pushing through as best she can. Cort is taking good care of Beth during all this, but his income is also severely impacted. There is hope for the future and they are holding on to optimism."
The couple's friend, Larry Blamire, said Massie and Skinner are hopeful, but the constant trips to various Virginia cancer centers are taxing on the duo.
Massie is known for her many horror and historical novels, as well as the occasional poetry and mainstream fiction pieces, Blamire said.
She even won the Scribe Award for her novelization of the third season of Showtime’s 'The Tudors', he added.
Although many believe that published authors are financially stable, the costs of Massie's treatments and medications, as well as the cost of transportation for treatments and loss of income, truly weighs on them, Blamire said.
"These two people have brought so much joy. Now let’s bring them some."
Blamire's fundraising page had raised over $14,300 of their $45,000 goal as of August 17.
Massie has a long road ahead of chemotherapy and radiation, with PET scans every several treatments to monitor progress, Blamire said.
Massie's readers and friends of her family wrote on GoFundMe to cheer her on as she embarks on this difficult journey.
