: Veteran Newsman/Church Historian From Bergenfield Devoted Himself To Others
It was only a few days before he was struck crossing the street in front of the Bergenfield apartment complex where he lived that 76-year-old Robert Armbruster was laughing and sharing memories with former colleagues let go from New Jersey’s largest newspaper a decade ago. Although his professional life was spent as a longtime copy editor at The Star-Ledger, Robert Armbruster devoted himself to helping others – building libraries for seminaries and schools in the Philippines and serving meals to the homeless in and around Bergenfield. Prayers were raised after word spread that Ambruster, fo…

NJ To Investigate Not Only Priests But Also Suspected Catholic Church Sex Abuse Cover-Ups
New Jersey authorities will investigate not only charges of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic Church but also any attempts by their superiors at covering it up, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced Thursday. “No person is above the law and no institution is immune from accountability,” Grewal said, noting that a special task force will issue subpoenas compelling priests and church officials to testify and surrender documents. Grewal has appointed an experienced sex crimes prosecutor to head a team of detectives and prosecutors from across the state who will collect and present …

Report: Westwood Pastor In Sexual Misconduct Probe Part Of 'Gay Subculture,' Priests Claim
The Rev. Jim Weiner of St. Andrew's Church in Westwood hosted cocktail parties attended by known homosexual priests from the Archiocese of Newark, several priests claim in a published report. Weiner -- who has taken a leave of absence as pastor amid a renewed sexual misconduct investigation -- “has a reputation among the clergy, dating back to his time in the seminary, for active homosexuality,” the priests reportedly told Catholic News Agency (CNA). It was all part of a subculture that existed while former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was the archdiocese’s archbishop, as well as under his s…

Another North Jersey Priest Takes Leave Of Absence Amid Sexual Misconduct Investigation
A second North Jersey priest has taken a leave of absence from his parish amid a renewed sexual misconduct investigation. Rev. Jim Weiner of St. Andrew's Church in Westwood stepped away from his position after church officials announced they would be reopening an investigation from nearly 15 years ago, Archdiocese of Newark spokesman Jim Goodness said. Weiner had intended to tell the community this weekend, Goodness said. An investigation by the Archdiocese of Newark was continuing into the actions of the Rev. Gerald Sudol at St. Francis of Assisi Church -- formerly of Ridgefield Park -- fo…

Ex-Ridgefield Park Priest Takes Leave After Onetime Altar Boy Describes Sex Abuse
UPDATE: A no-holds-barred account of sex abuse has gotten a once-popular Ridgefield Park priest removed from his current position. An investigation by the Archdiocese of Newark was continuing into the allegations against the Rev. Gerald Sudol at St. Francis of Assisi Church following an online column by village native Ed Hanratty that went viral, a spokesman for the diocese said. Sudol took a leave of absence as reverend in residence at Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church in Jersey City while the investigation proceeds, said the spokesman, Jim Goodness. Another local priest -- the Rev.…

Ridgefield Park Native Hailed For Detailing Sexual Abuse At Hands Of Popular Priest
It was the summer before 8th grade when Ridgefield Park native Ed Hanratty said the worst sexual abuse he’d endured from a local priest happened – in his own backyard. Before then, the Rev. Gerald Sudol of St. Francis of Assisi Church had kissed him and other boys on the mouth, Hanratty said. But instead of telling their parents, the boys made jokes about his sexuality. “None of us ever thought to complain to anyone. Not our parents. Not our teachers….Nobody,” Hanratty, 41, wrote in a reverbpress.news column that has begun attracting widespread attention since it was published on Sunday. “…

Prosecutor: New Milford Bookkeeper Swiped $200,000 From 3 Bergen Schools
The now-former business manager for three parochial schools in Bergen County stole more than $200,000 that she used to make more than 1,500 purchases on personal credit cards that she opened in other people’s names through a "large-scale, complex theft scheme," authorities charged. Mary M. Ayoub, 52, of New Milford “compromised the accounting records of one of the schools by making false vendor payment entries into the financial ledger system,” Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said Tuesday. The Alpine native and former Price Waterhouse audit manager then “used the false…
