Stamford Sanders Supporter Helped Iowans 'Feel The Bern' Before Caucus STAMFORD, Conn. — From nearly 1,000 miles away, Bernie Sanders supporter Nina Sherwood of Stamford helped Iowans "feel the bern." In the days and weeks before Monday’s Iowa caucus, Sherwood worked the phones from Connecticut, looking for voters willing to caucus for her rising underdog candidate and identifying undecided voters. Sherwood used the calls to collect information — not to convince voters. If Sherwood determined that a voter was undecided, she would pass that information to the campaign in Iowa. “The campaign (would) actually send a human being to their house to knock…

Sacred Heart U Professor Not Surprised By Close Results In Iowa FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Some may have been surprised by the narrow victories posted by Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton in the Iowa caucus, but Sacred Heart University Professor Gary Rose said the results were not unexpected. “I wasn’t all that surprised,” Rose told the Daily Voice on Tuesday. “I knew that it was going to be extremely close.” During Monday’s caucus, Clinton edged Bernie Sanders by a vote of "one state delegate equivalent" for Democrats. Among Republicans, Cruz gained nearly 28 percent of the vote, compared with 24 percent for Donald Trump and 23 percent for Marco R…

Lifelong Greenwich Resident Honored With Top Role In St. Patrick's Parade GREENWICH, Conn. — Cathy Lavaty has fond memories of watching the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Greenwich with her next-door neighbor. This year, it will be different: She will be making memories of her time marching in the parade. The Greenwich Hibernian Association recently named Lavaty as the grand marshal of the parade, which came as a surprise to the lifelong resident of Greenwich. “It stunned me, and it took a few minutes to register,” Lavaty said. Now, she has settled into her new role, fielding calls from old friends who have heard the news. “Right now I’ve been hearing from people …

Norwalk's St. Ann Club Grabs Award For Top Ratings In Health Inspections NORWALK, Conn. — With a volunteer waitstaff and no fixed menu, Norwalk’s St. Ann Club is unlike many establishments inspected by the city’s health department. The club also stands out in its health ratings: It passed multiple inspections last year with flying colors. Mayor Harry Rilling and Health Department officials presented the club with a certificate in recognition of its top lighthouse rating, which the city awards to eating establishments that receive top-flight scores on an average of three or four inspections throughout the previous year. Rilling, who has dined at the club many tim…

Norwalk's Forever Sweet Bakery Turns Exceptional Cakes into Dreams NORWALK, Conn. — A daughter wanted to find a cake with an edible 1925 Mercedes-Benz for her father. All found their edible and artistic treats at Norwalk’s Forever Sweet Bakery, which delights Fairfield County and beyond with cookies, cake pops, and, of course, cakes. New Canaan residents Frances and Sky Mercede started the business in their home kitchen before making the move to the Stamford Town Center mall. “We got a kiosk, and we wante…

Ferguson Library Ramps Up Accessibility To Starbucks With New Walkway STAMFORD, Conn. — The Starbucks inside Stamford’s Ferguson Library starts brewing coffee hours before visitors can browse the shelves. This arrangement, though, has proved challenging for some. The library’s handicap accessible ramp connected the street only with the library’s front entrance. That meant that anyone using a wheelchair or rolling a stroller couldn’t access Starbucks’ exterior entrance when the library was closed. But with the opening Tuesday of a walkway connecting the ramp to the Starbucks store, now “anybody can get into Starbucks, whenever it’s open,” Ferguson Library Pres…

It was the second train vs. a vehicle accident this week in Connecticut.   The red sedan was towed from the accident scene and taken away by a flatbed truck at 4 p.m. The train began to move shortly thereafter and was moved to the yard for inspection, officials said.  The crash occurred at a private crossing on Railroad Place off Commer…
