Bethel Group Helps Veterans, College Graduates Suit Up For Job Interviews BETHEL, Conn. — A job seeker should still wear a suit to interviews, according to Save-A-Suit Executive Director Jessica Ewud. “You only have about 10 seconds to make a great first impression,” said Ewud, who now lives in Redding and is a graduate of the Christian Heritage School based in Trumbull. “The first thing the employer sees is you.” But not everyone has the resources to buy a suit at a retail store, which could often be an expensive purchase. Ewud’s Bethel-based organization provides suits to college graduates and veterans in need — free of charge. The program, which was launched …

WestConn Meteorologist Warns of Dangerously Cold Temps In Danbury FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — After a winter with little snow and mostly mild temperatures, the weather is taking a dangerous and frigid turn across Fairfield County this weekend.  “We’ve just been spoiled,” Gary Lessor, a meteorologist at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, told the Daily Voice. “It’s been an unusually warm winter season because of El Niño.” But that will change Saturday, when the region will experience “extremely uncomfortable” temperatures, according to Lessor. That may be putting it sugar-coating it.  The forecast for Fairfield County for Saturday calls for a…

Each meditation candle pairs with an app called Gnarl that provides calming sounds for meditation. Logan’s husband designed the app along with the art for the candles’ labels. Norwalk Baker Takes Sweet Victory On 'Cake Wars' With Award-Winning Treat NORWALK, Conn. — Norwalk resident Renata Papadopoulos wasn’t expecting to take home the top prize on a recent episode of “Cake Wars.” “I definitely expected to go through the first phase, but for the second challenge, I really didn’t know,” Papadopoulos told the Daily Voice. “At the end, when the judges said that it was going to be a tie, I said, ‘Oh my God’.” But the tie was for second place. Papadopoulos took home the only first prize, which came as a welcome surprise. She said she wanted to do well in the competition, but winning wasn’t her sole motivation. “Of course you enter a compet…

Malloy Takes On Budget Cuts In Town Hall-Style Meeting In Stamford STAMFORD, Conn. — The solution to the state’s budget woes is to cut expenses — and not raise taxes — Gov. Dannel Malloy reiterated during a Town Hall-style meeting in Stamford on Thursday night. “We can’t simply go back every year and raise taxes precipitously and expect to be in a position to compete with our surrounding states and the other states and the rest of the country and, quite frankly, international challenges that are apparent,” Malloy told the crowd. Malloy fielded questions from audience members who were concerned about cuts, which Malloy said are necessary in the face of a n…

Sanders' Win In N.H. Brings Back Memory Of Lieberman's Historic VP Run FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Bernie Sanders' historic first win by a Jewish candidate in a presidential primary in New Hampshire brought to mind an earlier political milestone for local Jewish leaders. In 2000, Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore tapped Stamford native and then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman to be his running mate. Although they didn’t win, Gore’s announcement was, in some ways, more of a significant moment for Jewish leaders. “I think that Senator Lieberman’s choice had more of an impact because it was the first time that someone [Jewish] was on the national ticket — not ju…

Stamford Woman Digs Into Her Roots to Uncover Family's Historical Past STAMFORD, Conn. — When Stamford resident Marge Pavlov is not volunteering to clean up a city park or helping children learn to read, she is discovering her own story by researching her family’s past. “You get to know a little bit about who you are and who your ancestors were,” Pavlov recently said, sitting behind a binder stuffed with birth certificates, court papers and photos. Pavlov has been fascinated by the information that she has been able to uncover through her adventures into the lives of her ancestors. “It’s not just the names that are interesting,” Pavlov said. “It’s the stori…
