A "concerned citizen" tipped off the State Game Wardens about a Facebook post of a "kangaroo for sale" in Littlestown, the Gaming Commission said in a statement on Thursday, Sept. 15.
State Game Warden Taylor Knash identified "the individual that was suspected to be in possession of the kangaroo," as stated in the release.
But at first, the suspect lied about having a kangaroo, so a search warrant was executed and a 6-month-old kangaroo was found wrapped up in a blanket and stashed in a bedroom closet, according to the commission.
"The kangaroo was seized and taken to a properly licensed facility where it will be cared for," wardens say.
There are six species of kangaroos, none of which are known to have joeys under 8 months of age outside of their mother's pouch for extended periods of time, according to wildlife experts. The whereabouts of the joey's mother were not released.
"In Pennsylvania it is illegal to possess, import or sell exotic wildlife species without the proper permits. These laws are in place to protect the public as well as native wildlife species from the dangers and harm created by improper handling of these exotic species," the wardens added.
This isn't the first time an Australian-native marsupial was spotted in central Pennsylvania, as a wallaby was on the loose in August 2021; you can read more about that incident here.
