Multiple agencies were called to Independence Hall National Historical Park in Old City at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24 after a patrol officer found "a large fire engulfing the basement" at Carpenter's Hall said the National Park Service in a statement.

Rangers say the fire is being investigated as arson but did not describe their evidence. The condition of the building following the blaze was not immediately clear.

Carpenter's Hall was the meeting place for the First Continental Congress in 1774, and is where the Pennsylvania Provincial Conference officially created the Commonwealth by declaring independence from the British Empire in 1776, according to the building's website

Authorities are seeking the public's aid in tracking down the arsonist. To submit a tip, call or text 888-653-0009 or visit the National Park Service website.
