National Day Of Mourning To Close Sullivan County Government Offices Sullivan County government offices, including transfer stations and the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9, to observe the National Day of Mourning following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. According to County Spokesman Dan Hurst, essential services, including the 911 center, the Care Center, and the Sheriff’s Office, will continue operating as usual.  Legislature meetings scheduled for the day have also been canceled. Phone Scam Involving Fake Jury Summons Targets Hudson Valley Residents Authorities are warning Hudson Valley residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate sheriff’s office personnel and demand payment via gift cards.  The scam has been reported in Putnam County, the county's Sheriff's Office announced on Friday, Nov. 22. According to authorities, the caller claims to be “Sergeant Cook” from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and falsely states that the recipient failed to respond to a jury summons. Don't Fall For It: Local Resident Loses $12,000 In Scam Several area police agencies are investigating grand larceny complaints after a resident was allegedly scammed out of $12,000.  According to Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra, the scammer -- who is operating in Ulster County -- called a town resident, reporting to be an attorney representing the victim’s grandson, telling the victim he needed to pay $12,000 cash to have his grandson released from jail. Hours-Long Standoff Ends In Suicide In Area A tense hours-long standoff ended when an area resident with a rifle killed himself. Putnam County Sheriff Robert Langley, Jr. said the incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 23,  when the town of Kent Ambulance along with the EmStar medics were dispatched to Pudding Street in the Town of Putnam Valley for a man with chest pain. Court Fee Phone Scam Sparks Warning Officials are warning residents about a phone scam sweeping the area in which the caller claims to a representative of the Sheriff's Office civil division and demands payment for a legal matter. Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois said a scam of that type was operating recently in Cayuga County, where the caller said they were from the civil division and that the resident must go purchase a pre-paid Visa card and pay the money owed or face legal trouble.
