Prosecutor Offers Accused Bergen Burglars Plea Deals HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A prosecutor in Hackensack has offered three defendants prison sentences of seven to nine years if they plead guilty to a string of burglaries in nine Bergen County towns. Former Hasbrouck Heights Officer Gets 25 Years For Killing Childhood Friend WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. -- A former Hasbrouck Heights police officer was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison for killing his childhood pal with a knife and a hammer four years ago in Wood-Ridge in a dispute over money. Scott Smith, 37, must serve a little over 21 years before being eligible for parole, having pleaded guilty last fall to aggravated manslaughter for killing 39-year-old John Amendola in his home. Hillsdale Driver Admits Cocaine Use In Crash That Took Nurse's Arm HILLSDALE, N.J. -- A Hillsdale man admitted through sobs Tuesday that he was high on cocaine when he caused an accident in Westwood that took the left hand and forearm of a Teaneck hospital nurse. Probation, Threat From Judge In Bogota Kidnapping Case BOGOTA, N.J. -- A judge in Hackensack told a Jersey City man convicted of participating in a Bogota drug-related kidnapping that he'll send him to jail for a year unless he keeps his nose clean for the next two.
