Sheriff Carl E. DuBois traveled to Washington, D.C., recently to accept the award on behalf of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, according to a statement. DuBois' office is the first to receive the award in New York state.

The award, given in February, recognizes sheriff's offices that achieve simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies for Corrections and the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare.

Of the 3,079 sheriff's offices in the country, only 40 have received the honor, the Sheriff's Office said.

The award comes in the wake of significant regional drug arrests involving the Sheriff's Office that have taken large quantities of heroin, cocaine and other opiates and painkillers off the streets.

“I am extremely proud of my staff for the professional effort they have shown during this process, as it is a major achievement in the law enforcement community,” DuBois said in a press statement.

DuBois' sentiments were echoes by Col. Kenneth Decker, jail administrator.

“The Corrections Division of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office takes pride in the role they have played in obtaining this award," Decker said.

The Triple Crown designation recognizes those departments that demonstrate outstanding commitment to public safety, security, well-being of jail inmates and efficient agency business practices.
