The state legislature approved Thursday afternoon legislation to name the new Tappan Zee Bridge after former Gov. Mario Cuomo, who served three terms as governor. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mario's son, is expected to sign the bill into law this week.

The move has been criticized by both Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Rockland County Executive Ed Day. Astorino said it would be more appropriate to name something in Queens after Cuomo while Day said Rockland residents should get to weigh in.

Cuomo said the idea first came from outgoing Assemblyman Denny Farrell.

"Denny said, 'we should think about naming the bridge after your father,'" Cuomo said. "My father doesn't have anything named after him. I thought it was a good idea."

Cuomo said critics should put aside the "baloney" politics.

"He was a great public official," Cuomo said of his father. 

The current bridge is named after another former New York governor, Malcolm Wilson, who lived in Westchester.
