Dutchess Officials Confident About County's System For Homeless

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- The system in place for Dutchess County's homeless is substantial, meaning few changes will result from Gov. Andrew Cuomo's recent executive orde now in effect, reports the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro said the county already has a system in place for people that are homeless.

Responding to the order, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro said the county will institute the  practice of contacting the state’s mental hygiene team, something's that's not always done when homeless people are identified in the county, says the Poughkeepsie Journal

The state's Hygiene Law ensures local and state agencies locate homeless people who don't want or can't find shelter in the extreme cold, reports the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The 60-bed Webster House in Poughkeepsie operates Dutchess County's only overnight emergency shelter, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

New York has more than 77,000 emergency shelter beds for the homeless. The governor's order ensures assistance from the state to local services districts if they are lacking resources, facilities or expertise to facilitate the transfer of homeless individuals to sheltered locations, the Daily Voice reported Jan. 4.
