HILLBURN, N.Y. – Multiple agencies, including the police, having been battling to contain a fire at a Con Edison substation in Hillburn that started Friday night.
But officials are warning of possible power outages as repairs are made to the substation.
"The fire is now under control," RPD Police Chief Brad Weidel said in a statement at 11:38 a.m. Saturday. "The fire will be allowed to burn itself out. This may take up to another 24 hours."
Power is still on at the substation, Weidel said.
"Once the fire is out, O&R will determine best course of action to take to begin repairs," Weidel said. "It is possible that once repairs start there may be power outages in the region. It is too early at this time to determine the extent, if any, of any possible outages.
"Numerous fire departments and other emergency services are on scene. This remains a secure area with no access except for authorized personnel."
The fire started about 8 p.m. Friday, about 150 feet away from the Torne Brook.
Metal casing made containing flames difficult, and the fire flared back up several times, FiOS1 News reported.
