Police Chief Suspended In Clarkstown

CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. - Clarkstown's police chief was suspended Wednesday by town officials, who have remained silent on the reason behind the decision, lohud.com reported.

The suspension of Chief Michael Sullivan became effective Wednesday and was approved by the all-Republican Town Board, according to the town supervisor's Chief of Staff Vincent Balascio. Capt. Robert Mahon will serve as interim chief while Sullivan will remain on paid leave, according to lohud.com.

A decision to hire a firm to study the police department has seen Town Supervisor Goerge Hoehmann and Sullivan in conflict; Sullivan publicly questioned the decision in the past, according to lohud.com.

Sullivan, who started his career as a New York City police officer 32 years ago, joined the Clarkstown Police Department in 1987. He was promoted to sergeant in 1995, lieutenant in 2000, captain in 2009 and chief in 2011.
