"I join all residents in mourning the loss of Joseph Lemm who was killed along with five other service members in a suicide bombing in Bigram Afghanistan on Dec. 21," Day said in a statement. "We are forever indebted to Sgt. Lemm, along with his fellow service members who were killed, for their service and sacrifice.
"America has lost a true patriot, and, on behalf of all the citizens of Rockland, I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. Lemm’s life was cut short, but his service to our nation and New York City will not be forgotten."
Earlier this week, New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton also said in a statement that Lemm "epitomized the selflessness we can only strive for: putting his country and city first."
He was "heck of a cop," said his commanding officer, Capt. William Kivlehan, to reporters. "He got a lot of violent guys off the street.”
The attack that killed Lemm, was the largest this year for the U.S.-lead coalition in Afghanistan. So far, 16 U.S. troops have died in combat, according to Pentagon announcements.
