The incident started around 12:30 when the hiker, who was on a ledge clinging for his life, called his girlfriend from his cell phone. He also took cell phone footage, hoping it would help rescuers guide them to his location.
While waiting to be rescued, he was taking footage on his cell phone. An officer on the scene said it took about 15 minutes to locate him using GPS to his cell phone.
Firefighters ferried him down the mountain in a "basket" just before 4 p.m. to a waiting Nyack Ambulance Corps. crew, which took him to Nyack Hospital.
It appeared that the hiker may have fallen from the upper level plateau to a lower level.
Speaking off the record, an officer said the hiker had back injuries. "He was pretty beat up but conscious."
The man's name and home town has not been identified.
In addition to Clarkstown Police, other rescue outfits on the scene included New York State Park Police, New York State Park Rangers, Nyack Fire Department, Nyack Rope Rescue, Nyack Paramedics, and the Rock County Sheriff's Office.
There is no report of the hiker’s medical condition but he is verbally communicating with first responders. His girlfriend, who's on the scene nodded when asked if her boyfriend is okay,
The man reportedly fells down a sheer wall. He fell about 400 yards from the entrance to the trail along the upper plateau of Hook Mountain trail.
The man's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
