As work continues on the new Tappan Zee Bridge, commuters, residents, and even school districts should get ready for a month of delays, detours and more as a large portion of River Road in South Nyack is closed to make room for the demolition of the existing Tappan Zee Bridge.
The closure of the busy roadway will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and extend into early November. The road will be closed 24/7 during that time period, but the work will take place between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., said Khurram Saeed, director of communications for the New Bridge.
The work will require the use of mobile cranes and other equipment as workers remove large sections of concrete and steel from the area, employing noise mitigation techniques to minimize impacts to residents.
During the closure, a detour route will be established to lead vehicles onto Route 9W, Saeed said.
To safely accomplish the demolition, Tappan Zee Constructors and the New York State Thruway Authority are working closely with emergency and first responder agencies, Rockland County transportation officials, elected officials, affected school districts, and commercial bus companies that service the area.
Alternate routes for commuter bus services have also been established and the closure site will be monitored 24/7 by project safety personnel who will provide temporary access for emergency service vehicles, he added.
Cyclists are strongly encouraged to avoid the area, as demolition efforts will require extended waiting periods on River Road. Project safety personnel will hold bicycle traffic for up to an hour on weekdays and up to 15 minutes on Saturdays. Access will be provided without extended waiting periods on Sundays.
