Alex Bruen and Michael J. Rizzo, representing Troop 2055 of Blauvelt, were honored by County Executive Ed Day on May 21 at the Congers Lake Community Center after they obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. Alex Bruen is from West Nyack and Michael J. Rizzo is from Orangetown.
“These fine young men have set an outstanding example by giving back to their community,” Day said. “We thank them for all of their efforts.”
Eagle Scout is the highest attainable rank within the Boy Scouts of America youth advancement program. The honor is elusive: only around 5 percent of Boy Scouts achieve the honor, according to the National Eagle Scout Association.
There are a number of requirements a scout must meet in order to become an Eagle Scout, among them the completion of a service project. In order to meet service project requirement, a scout must plan, develop, and provide leadership on a project that is helpful to a religious institution, school, or community.
Bruen constructed six raised vegetable gardens for the West Nyack Elementary School and the donation of supplies to maintain the gardens.
Rizzo made improvements to the Home for Heroes in Tappan that included providing new flower boxes, making some walkway repairs, planting trees and flowers, and the donation of a picnic table that he built.
Day said that Bruen and Rizzo's achievement will be enjoyed by the community for years to come.
