Two Long Island drawbridge projects and one ferry plaza project will be paused with the intention of easing tourists’ travel this summer. On Friday, May 19, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the three Long Island construction projects will be paused until the fall in order to minimize travel times this summer. State Agencies Increase Patrols, Surveillance At Long Island Beaches Due To Shark Attacks
State officials have ordered heightened patrols and surveillance of shark activity at Long Island State Park beaches amid an increase in sightings and reports of swimmers getting bit. Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Monday morning, July 18, that she has directed State Parks to increase lifeguard staffing at ocean beaches by 25 percent. Swimming Resumes At Long Island Beaches After Shark Sightings, Warnings
Swimmers were allowed back in the water at Long Island beaches after it was temporarily suspended due to shark sightings off the shore. Swimming was permitted once again on Thursday, Aug. 5 at Robert Moses State Park after officials were forced to suspend it the day before when a massive number of bunker fish were spotted near the Fire Island Lighthouse, which attracted more predatory marine life. 19: State Park Family Passes Will Be Given To NYers Who Get Vaxed Through Memorial Day
New York is “taking a shot in the park” to encourage New Yorkers to go out and get the COVID-19 vaccine. Any New Yorker who receives a COVID-19 vaccination this week will receive a free two-day family pass to visit any state park, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at a briefing on Monday, May 24 at Jones Beach in advance of Memorial Day Weekend. Anyone vaccinated between Monday, May 24, and Monday, May 31 will be eligible to receive passes. A popular Long Island restaurant that has been a destination spot for summers for the past 12 years is closing its doors. Surf’s Out, a go-to Fire Island restaurant for cocktails and a meal on a lazy summer day, announced on Facebook on Friday, March 12, it won't reopen for summer visitors leaving a hole in a spot that has few eateries serving the beach community.
