New Update: Massive Long Island Brush Fire Covers 20 Acres
It took almost 10 hours for responders to contain massive brush fire on Long Island is being battled by 18 responding departments. The blaze broke out at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in Riverhead in a wooded area to the east side of 3000 Sound Avenue. It was finally contained at around 10 a.m. Saturday. A total of 20 acres were affected by the blaze, according to the Town of Riverhead Police. In addition to the Riverhead FD, 17 other departments are assisting at the scene. NYC Resident Accused Of Starting Wildfire In Region
A New York City resident allegedly violated the statewide brush burn ban which caused a wildland fire in the region. On Tuesday, March 22 at 4:15 p.m., state forest rangers responded to an open burn in Sullivan County off Route 209 in the town of Mamakating, said the state Department of Environmental Conservation. A 41-year-old Manhattan resident was burning brush and had left the fire unattended, DEC officials said. Due to high winds and dry conditions, the fire spread to approximately 2.5 acres of land. New Wind Advisory: Strong Gusts Up To 50 MPH Could Cause Power Outages, Cause Brush Fires
Clocks moved ahead an hour overnight for the start of Daylight Saving Time, but there's been no change in the dry, blustery conditions that marked the start of the weekend. Winds will be out of the Northwest with speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 mph that could lead to power outages on Sunday, March 14.
