A New York man who opened fire on an occupied car on a busy Albany street is headed to prison, authorities said.
Michael Johnson, 40, of Hudson, was sentenced Wednesday, July 22 to nine years and six months in prison for the shooting, the Albany County District Attorney’s office announced.
Johnson was walking in the area of Henry Johnson Boulevard and Clinton Avenue just after 9 p.m. on Oct. 19, 2024, when he opened fire on a vehicle in the roadway, investigators said.

Another man held in New York state prison has died in a violent incident, the third such death in five days, police said.
Jose R. Aponte, 34, was killed Tuesday, July 21 in a fight at Collins Correctional Facility south of Buffalo, New York State Police said.
Another prisoner attacked Aponte in a residential rehabilitation unit, prison sections used for “therapy, treatment, and rehabilitative programming” for people requiring “more than 15 days of disciplinary confinement,” according to state authorities.

A Capital Region man has been arrested for drunkenly crashing an electric bike, police said Wednesday, July 22.
Eric W. Cerny, 69, was booked for operating a bicycle with electric assist while in an intoxicated condition, a misdemeanor, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s office.
Cerny, of Milton, was riding the bike on Galway Road around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, when he was cut off by a motor vehicle and wrecked, investigators said.

Daycare Worker Arrested For Spanking Child In Greene County: Police
A Capital Region woman has been arrested for spanking a child at daycare, according to state police.
Amanda Orser, 28, of Catskill, disciplined the child at Precious Tots Nursery and Daycare in Cairo on Thursday, July 16 with authorization to do so, New York State Police said.
Cairo police began investigating shortly afterward and turned the case over to state troopers, who arrested Orser on Friday, July 17, authorities said.

A 38-year-old New Jersey fisherman died suddenly while on board a vessel off the coast of Long Island on Tuesday, July 21, police said.
Sean Smida, 38, of Toms River, fell unconscious just before 10 a.m. Tuesday when the ship was about 130 nautical miles east of Montauk Point, the East Hampton Police Department said.
