Suffolk County Police announced they are investigating the incident, which occurred on Monday, July 31 in Smithtown.

That morning, a 54-year-old Greenlawn woman forgot to drop off her granddaughter at daycare while on her way to work, police claimed.

The child was left in a car seat in the back of the woman’s 2018 Jeep Cherokee.

Approximately eight hours later, the grandmother left work to pick up the toddler from daycare but soon discovered that the toddler had been left in the backseat.

She was transported to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where she was pronounced dead.

On average, car temperatures can rise 20 degrees within the first 10 minutes of the car being off, even with a window open. When the outside temperature reaches 80 degrees, a parked car can heat up to approximately 123 degrees.
