Three Rescued After Sailboating Accident In Westchester, Police Say
Three were rescued from the Long Island Sound after crashing their sailboat into a rock, police in Westchester said. New Rochelle Police officers responded in Marine I to Davenport Reef on the Long Island Sound at approximately 6:44 p.m. on Monday, May 31, when a 27-foot sailboat struck a rock and took on water. Police said that the captain of the sailboat was able to navigate the boat toward the Davenport Beach Club and began capsizing approximately 100 yards off the shore. A “distressed” kayaker was rescued from the Long Island Sound following an incident over the weekend, police in Westchester said. Officers from the New Rochelle Police Department’s Marine Unit in Marine I responded to Middle Ground in the Long Island Sound at 2:41 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, where there was a report of a kayaker in distress in a rocky area near the channel by David’s Island. A deer with a bucket on its head was saved from the waters of Long Island Sound with a little help from two people. The incident took place on Saturday, Nov. 21, near Port Jefferson. Frank Floridia from the Strong Island Animal Rescue League was called to the scene, reported ABC 7. Reportedly, Floridia attempted to swim to the deer but the water was too cold. Three men from Connecticut are facing up to a year in prison and fines after admitting to scuttling abandoned boats in the Long Island Sound. Southbury resident John Magness, 71, Peter Albrecht, 70, of Norwalk, and Carlos Santos, 60, of Westbrook, pleaded guilty to a federal charge related to the destruction of several sailboats and motorboats between the Black Rock Harbor and the Pennfield Reef Lighthouse in Long Island Sound. The incident happened around 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 on Long Island's North Fork in Suffolk County off Route 48 in the village of Greenport, when the 9-foot long rowboat was in the area of the Cliff Side condominiums, Southold Town Police said. Two brothers had to be rescued from the Long Island Sound after their rowboat became stranded miles from the shore. Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10 after two Brentwood brothers found themselves stranded approximately three miles off Sunken Meadow Beach. Reports of a tornado touching down in coastal Fairfield County from the Long Island Sound during the height of Tropical Storm Isaias have proven to be accurate. The National Weather Service confirmed late Friday afternoon, Aug. 7 that a storm cell produced a waterspout off the ocean that made landfall as an EF-1 tornado in the Saugatuck section of Westport at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Police officers came to the rescue of a group of boaters who were fighting a losing battle against the current while rafting on the Long Island Sound. Three Long Island Beaches Close After High Levels Of Bacteria Discovered
A pair of Suffolk County beaches and one in Nassau County have been temporarily closed to swimmers due to high levels of bacteria in the water. Health officials announced on Wednesday, July 22 that Venetian Shores Beach in Lindenhurst and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore have been temporarily shut down when tests determined the water was contaminated. Crescent Beach in Glen Cove is also closed due to elevated bacteria levels from the Long Island Sound.
