Local leaders and loved ones are mourning the loss of a Long Island politician and former police officer following his unexpected death. Nassau County resident and Hempstead Councilman Christopher Carini died at the age of 49 on Sunday, July 14, while on a family vacation in Florida, relatives confirmed. Several elected officials in New York are among thousands of names appearing on leaked membership lists for the far-right extremist militia group, the Oath Keepers, according to a report released Wednesday, Sept. 7. The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Center on Extremism examined more than 38,000 names on leaked Oath Keepers membership rolls and identified more than 470 people who currently work in law enforcement or serve in the military. Two more Long Island municipalities will be opting out of offering legalized marijuana as New York gets set to go all-in on cannabis sales. Both the East Hampton Village and Town of East Hampton made it official that they will not permit the retail sale of marijuana within their jurisdictions, though officials left the door open for potential future sales.
