The incident took place around 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, when Rafael Sanchez, 37, of Manhattan, called the 72-year-old man and pretended to be his grandson, said the Nassau County Police.
Sanchez then told the victim that he needed bail money after being arrested. The victim was then given another number to call to set up a bail amount and instructions to deliver the money, police said.
The victim, who became suspicious and was aware of ongoing scams being perpetrated on the public, called the department's First Precinct and spoke to detectives about what had just transpired.
With the assistance of detectives, the victim again called the number and set up a meeting to deliver $7,000 in person and described what he would be wearing to the subject, police said.
An investigating detective dressed as the victim and with the assistance of other detectives and undercover officers, responded to a Stop & Shop in Bellmore to meet him, police said.
After locating the Sanchez's vehicle, the detective approached him, and confirmed the intended transaction and then arrested Sanchez.
Sanchez was charged with attempted grand larceny and criminal impersonation. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 2.
