A Morristown woman must spend the next year and a half in federal prison for helping smuggle more than $2 million worth of aircraft parts to buyers in Iran who authorities said have ties to Hezbollah and Hammas. Joyce Eliabachus, 53, was the principal officer and operator of Edsun Equipments, a purported New Jersey-based aviation parts trading company that she ran from her home, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said. She conspired with others in “an international procurement network that surreptitiously acquired large quantities of aircraft components from United States-based manufacturers and…

Body Of Bergen Man Who Drowned 5 Weeks Ago Recovered From Deepest Part Of Lake Tahoe
The body of a Closter man who went missing in Lake Tahoe five weeks ago was found more than 1,500 feet below the surface, authorities said. Ryan Normoyle, a talented 29-year-old woodworker, had recorded the final cellphone images of himself happily jumping off a rented boat that he’d rented on Aug. 10 during a three-week West Coast vacation last month. “It looks like he was playing around in the water didn’t know the boat was in gear,” South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Federal authorities have moved to seize 11 bank accounts, an investment account and a million-dollar Cresskill home bought by a Cliffside Park lawyer accused of scamming lenders out of $9M intended for small businesses crippled by COVID-19. Jae H. Choi, 48, got the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds from three lenders on behalf of non-existent businesses that he claimed provided educational services, an indictment returned by a grand jury in U.S. District Court in Newark alleges. Choi fabricated the existence of hundreds of employees, manipulated bank and tax records, and falsified a d…

Dueling Forecasts: New, Old Farmers' Almanacs Clash On Winter Weather Predictions
Want an early read on the weather outlook for the winter of 2020-21? The new and old Farmers' Almanacs have each released their winter weather forecasts -- and they're not exactly in agreement. One says the northeast will see a light winter while the other says cold and snowy. "If you love the cold of winter, you’re going to love our forecast if you live in the northern half of the country," the Farmers' Almanac said, noting a major blizzard the second week of February will be among several big storms in the area. “This storm may bring up to 1-2 feet of snow to cities from …

The right whale calf found floating off the Jersey Shore last week had evidence of at least two separate vessel collisions, federal authorities said. On Monday, NOAA released preliminary results on a necropsy, finding that the whale had several propeller wounds across his head and chest, and a likely rudd…

19: You May Have Had Virus And Not Known It, CDC Says
There have been around 2.5 million cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States since the pandemic began in mid-March. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now saying that it's possible that just 10 percent of people infected with the virus are included in that number because most cases went undiagnosed. Dr. Robert Redfield, the CDC's director, said in a media briefing that a "good estimate" is 10-to-1 for those infected with COVID to those testing positive. That means the number of people who have or had COVID in the United States is about 25 …

A now-former aide to New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer admitted using the U.S. House of Representatives seal to falsify letters written on the federal lawmaker’s letterhead. Patrick Sheehan, 29, of West Milford, was working as director of community outreach in Gottheimer’s Sussex County office in Newton when he “falsified and mailed” a series of letters that purported to be from another staffer containing false information about the congressman and that employee, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said following Friday's guilty plea. Asian giant hornets can use shark-fin shaped appendages to destroy a beehive, decapitating its victims in a matter of minutes. “It’s a shockingly large hornet,” said Todd Murray, Washington State University's Extension entomologist and invasive species specialist. “It’s a health hazard, and more importantly, a significant predator of honey bees.” That's especially concerning sin…
