Case Of Mumps Confirmed In NJ Prompts Warning From State Health Officials
The New Jersey Department of Health announced it's investigating eight suspected cases of mumps in one family cluster in Hunterdon County. One case of measles has been confirmed in the state this year, NJDOH said. The mumps case is related to international travel, NJDOH said. The state is urging individuals, especially parents, guardians and caregivers, to be aware of the symptoms of these highly contagious viruses and to stay up to date with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shots. Five Bergen County Jail inmates were confirmed with mumps, authorities said Friday. "The Bergen County Department of Health Services has received confirmation of five of the 6 suspected cases of mumps in the Bergen County Jail with no additional cases at this time being reported," said Michael Pagan, a spokesman for County Executive Jim Tedesco. The entire Bergen County Jail was in lockdown after five inmates were quarantined with suspected mumps, authorities reported Tuesday night. "Isolation means no additional inmates accepted and no one out until we're comfortable that there's no risk of exposure," County Executive Jim Tedesco said during a news conference in Hackensack.No staffers have shown any signs of infection, Tedesco said, adding that 1,000 doses of a vaccine were ordered for staff and inmates.
