A man stopped his 2015 Infiniti Q50 shortly before 11 a.m. at the intersection of Lafayette and Madison streets when one of the boys approached, posing as a panhandler.

The second boy entered the car on the passenger side and showed a gun, threatening to shoot.  He struck the driver with the weapon and the driver got out,  then the two boys drove off, according to police.

The driver was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Detectives nearby spotted the Infiniti as well as a gray Nissan Altima that had been carjacked the day before. Both boys left the Infiniti and entered the Altima, police said.

Police and Essex County Sheriff's officers chased the second car to South 11th Street and Avon Avenue,  where the boys abandoned it and tried to run away. They were caught following a brief foot chase.

Police also recovered a handgun that had been tossed during the chase, Ambrose said.

Both have been charged with carjacking, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy. The 14-year old is also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“I commend the officers and detectives who acted quickly to apprehend these suspects,” Ambrose said.

The diligence and professionalism of our officers are invaluable assets to the people we serve. Anyone who considers committing violent crimes in our city should think twice, because they will be caught.”
