Responding to an activated alarm at John's Deli on West Passaic Avenue, police discovered that the glass front door had been smashed with a rock and that $200 had been taken from the cash register.
As officers checked around the building, they saw that the front door to another business, Prissy Paws, had been damaged. Officers found that the business had been ransacked and about $100 was taken from the register.
Officers combing the area spotted a man walking south on Broad Street near Brookside Tavern. When the man spotted police, he hid behind a trailer and then ran off, according to authorities.
Around this time another officer saw a taxi pull into the IHOP parking lot on Broad Street. When the officer pulled the cab over at Watchung Avenue and Clair Street, the passenger, who matched the description of the man who fled from police earlier, ran off, authorities said. Police soon received reports of a man jumping fences and going through backyards, Officers captured him after a brief foot pursuit.
Vontra Marrow, 24, was later identified as the suspect in a third burglary, at Bagels Abroad on Broad Street. The burglary there was reported early Monday after Marrow was allegedly seen on video stealing a tip jar containing $500. Marrow also allegedly used a bread truck stolen out of North Bergen as his getaway vehicle.
He has been charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property, obstructing administration of the law and resisting arrest.
Marrow was being held at the Essex County jail.
