Power Restored To Whiting After 5,200+ People Left In The Cold And Dark An overloaded power grid failed under the strain of freezing temperatures, knocking out power for more than 5,000 people in Whiting two days before Christmas, authorities said. Nearly 6,000 customers lost electricity on Monday, Dec. 23, and the vast majority were in Manchester Township. The outages began around 8 a.m. as daytime temperatures hovered at 23 degrees and plunged to the low teens overnight.
