Officers found two shell casings in a grass field and a 2017 Honda Accord with a bullet hole in the front passenger door as they responded to the shooting report in the 100 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard just after 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. Newark Officer Struck By Mercedes SUV Stolen Out Of Elizabeth A Newark police officer was hospitalized after being struck by a stolen vehicle Tuesday night. The officer noticed a Mercedes Benz SUV stolen out of Elizabeth on Quitman Street near Spruce Street around 11 p.m., Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said. The driver noticed the police presence, pulled off and hit the officer, O'Hara said. The injured officer was taken to University Hospital for treatment and was in stable condition as of Wednesday.  The vehicle was recovered by police at Livingston Street. Authorities ID Man Killed In Newark Shooting Police have identified a man killed in a shooting in Newark Monday night, authorities said. Officers responding to a report of shots fired in the area of Spruce Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard just before 9 p.m. found Michael Rutledge, 34, laying on the sidewalk, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:27 pm.
