Heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions have prompted school closures and delays across parts of North Jersey Friday, Nov. 22. Precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day, with snowfall accumulation most significant near and north of the Route 78 corridor in Pennsylvania and northwest New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly. Jersey City Catholic School Shutters Citing Declining Enrollment
A Catholic school in Jersey City announced last month it is closing down and will not reopen in the fall. The Archdiocese of Newark is closing St. Nicholas Catholic School, which serves students from Pre-K to 8th Grade, citing declining enrollment and increasing fiscal challenges. Several solutions were considered, including merging the school with St. Joseph School, but numerous teaching vacancies led to the decision to shutter it, the Archdiocese said. After nearly 65 years, the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Wayne is closing its doors. Substitute teaching pay has more than doubled in a South Jersey school district this year due to staff shortages, NJ Advance Media repotted, citing school sources. Four of Camden’s oldest school buildings will close permanently at the end of the school year as part of the district’s reorganization plan, officials said. Officials from Newton Public Schools, Sparta Township Public Schools (Sussex County) and North Arlington Public Schools (Bergen County) announced this week. Kinnelon Superintendent Diane DiGiuseppe warned parents in an Oct. 11 letter that the high school could switch to virtual learning pending more information from contact tracers.
