Honig announced Tuesday that her office has taken over the prosecution of Phillip Wiggins Jr. of Newark for the March 31, 2020 slaying of Damone “Munch” Smith. Heavenley Cherry, 19, of Jersey City, was charged with first degree murder in the July 6 killing of Tyeah Garner on July 6, in which Tyeah was found with a gunshot wound to her head in a single-family home on Rutgers Avenue just after 10:30 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Jersey City Girl, 17, Shot, Killed A 17-year-old girl was shot and killed Monday night in Jersey City, authorities said. Tyeah Garner was found with a single gunshot wound in the face at a single-family home on tree-lined Rutgers Avenue, near the corner of Sheffield Street, just after 10:30 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Tyeah was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead five hours later. Dozens Displaced In Jersey City Fire, Chief Says Blaze 'Suspicious' A fire that tore through four houses in Jersey City early Friday morning is under control, a city spokeswoman said.  The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. on Wade Street near Rutgers Avenue and went to four alarms before it was contained. Two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and returned to duty.
