Twenty Displaced Following Three Jersey City Fires
Firefighters had a busy Sunday, May 8, in Jersey City, with three different residential fires displacing 20 people, authorities said. Jersey City firefighters were first called to 150 New York Ave. at 1:44 p.m. for a two-alarm fire in a three-story three-family residential structure, Kimberly Wallace-Scalfione, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office said. The home suffered extensive damage and nine people were relocated by the Red Cross, Wallace-Scalfione said. No injuries were reported, Wallace-Scalfione said. A massive fire tore through three Elizabeth homes Sunday, March 13. The blaze broke out around 3:30 p.m. at 160 Smith St., and had risen to four alarms by the evening. At least two collapses were reported. All city companies were operating, with mutual aid at the scene. More than two dozen people were displaced. The cause remains under investigation.

Hackensack Woman Burned On Face, Chest After Cigarette Ignites Oxygen Tube
A Hackensack smoker on home oxygen suffered burns on her chest and face after her cigarette ignited an apartment fire, authorities said. The 50-something victim was alert when she was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center following Wednesday's mishap at the Quail Heights Apartments on Prospect Avenue, city Fire Capt. Justin Derevyanik said. A man who doused the fire sustained minor burns but declined medical attention, Derevyanik said. Fire officials were investigating, the captain said.
