First responders can sometimes have thankless jobs -- but not in Lyndhurst, where they were applauded by a schoolful of grateful youngsters. The K-through-2nd graders from Washington School thanked Lyndhurst's local heroes for saving their school after a blaze broke out in the basement last month. A family's cat died in a smoky basement fire in Lyndhurst, responders at the scene said. Borough firefighters assisted by their colleagues from North Arlington quickly doused the Forest Avenue blaze near Ridge Road, which broke out in the 2½-story, wood-frame house around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29. Firefighters Douse Lyndhurst Chemical Fire
A smoky Labor Day fire in a chemical processing machine at a Lyndhurst plant didn't create a potential health hazard, authorities said. Firefighters quickly doused the blaze, which broke out on the second floor of the Sika Corporation building on Polito Avenue down the road from Medieval Times shortly before 2:30 p.m. A faulty electrical component on processing equipment was the cause, authorities said. : Good Samaritans, Police Rescue Driver Whose SUV Plunged Into Passaic River
A motorist was rescued by a family of good Samaritans and Nutley police after he drove his SUV into the Passaic River as high tide rolled in. The rescuers jumped in and got the driver out after the vehicle plunged down the boat ramp north of the Kingsland Avenue Bridge, which connects Nutley and Lyndhurst, shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, responders said. The SUV then became submerged in 10 feet of water about 100 feet or so from shore, they said. North Arlington Burn Victim Airlifted To Barnabas From Lyndhurst
A North Arlington woman was flown to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston after she was severely burned Saturday afternoon in a cooking flashover. An ambulance brought the 45-year-old Madison Street victim to the Riverside County Park field in Lyndhurst, where an AirMed One chopper picked her up shortly before 1 p.m., Capt. Robert Reilly said. Reilly thanked Hackensack University Medical Center, along with Lyndhurst police, firefighters and Police Emergency Squad members who established the landing zone.
