Curfew For Kids: Newark Enacts 'Juvenile Safety Initiative'
As the weather gets warmer, New Jersey's largest city is taking action to keep kids safe. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Fritz Fragé announced the city is launching an overnight for kids ages 17 and below, calling it a "Juvenile Safety Initiative." Five adults and four youngsters packed into a single vehicle all escaped injury when shots were fired at them in Passaic, authorities said. Hours after a city police officer stopped a gunman across town, a call came in of shots fired at Fourth and South streets. Several children were among a shocked crowd of people who witnessed a local basketball coach attack a Cliffside Park special police officer in broad daylight. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder late Saturday in Paterson, authorities said.
